Bluenose II: Lunenburg is the home port of Nova Scotia’s sailing ambassador, the Bluenose II. The graceful ship is a replica of the original fishing schooner that found fame winning the International Fishermen’s Race starting in 1921. St. John’s Anglican Church: The second oldest Protestant church in Canada, was established in 1754. In 2001, it was partially destroyed in a Halloween night fire, but has been completely restored in years since. Come by and take a guided tour of the beautifully restored gothic architecture, or take in one of many Musique Royale concerts throughout the year.

The farmers’ market offers a fabulous selection of local products, art and craft.

A piece of the Berlin Wall in Lunenburg! James J Kinley brought a section of the Berlin Wall to Lunenburg in the late nineties and put it on display to honour the towns ties with Germany as 1,400 German immigrants established the community of Lunenburg in 1753. The wall section is on display in front of the Lunenburg Legion.

Lunenburg Academy: The Lunenburg Academy, built between 1893-1895, is a massive, three-storey wooden Victorian building in the eclectic tradition, boldly painted in red, black and white in the town of Lunenburg, NS.

Mahone Bay: Mahone Bay is a must-see town on the coast of Nova Scotia, just 15 minutes from the town of Lunenburg. Settled in 1754 and founded on the shipbuilding and logging industries, the history of Mahone Bay is rich in tradition. Discover the story at the Settlers Museum and pick up a free historic walking tour pamphlet, then find your favourite spot along the historic harbourfront to capture one of the most photographed views in Nova Scotia, the Three Churches of Mahone Bay.

Blue Rocks: A small village about a six minute drive from the Town of Lunenburg. The little community of Blue Rocks is advertised as “The small version of Peggy’s Cove”. Still a working fishing village with blue slate rocks on the edge of the ocean making it an artisan and photographers muse. The fish shack sitting in the water is the most photographed building in the county. You can spend some time relaxing there, taking pictures or you can have an ice cream at the little store and explore the area.

Ovens Natural Park: Walk our spectacular cliffside nature trail to the famous sea caves or “Ovens” for which the park was named. Experience the Park’s fascinating gold rush history, unique geology and diverse coastal environment as you enjoy our self-guided tour along the beautiful sea cliff trail that leads to the famous Ovens Sea caves. High points of the tour are the visits to Tucker’s Tunnel, the overlook at Indian Cave and finally, spectacular Cannon Cave, where you will be able to hear the resounding boom created as the waves enter the cavern. This is an easy 1 hour tour.

Gaff Point: Unique, unspoiled promontory of 124 acres separates the LaHave estuary and Hartling Bay. It consists of marine, terrestrial and wetland ecosystems. Both sides of the point have steep cliffs. There are tidal pools where topography becomes gentler and sand and gravel beaches along the shoreline.

Hirtle’s Beach: A nature enthusiast’s paradise. Categorized as a living beach because the beach moves and shifts at the whim of the ocean. Hirtle’s Beach is ever changing. Here you will find more than three kilometers of white sand, rolling surf, fresh sea air, drumlin cliffs and breathtaking views. Located in Kingsburg 20 minutes from Lunenburg.

Crescent Beach: Connecting the LaHave Islands to the mainland this beach streches out from the shore to Georges Island and provides a popular beach destination for tourists throughout the summer.Directions to Crescent Beach are very Scenic. Follow King Street south out of town of Bridgewater. This street is also Route 331, part of the Lighthouse Route. About 20 minutes from the town is Crescent Beach. You will be following the lovely LaHave River to the ocean and seeing lots of artisans and the LaHave Bakery where you can stop for lunch or a coffee and a snack.

Peggy's Cove: The community is named after the cove of the same name, a name also shared with Peggy's Point, immediately to the east of the cove. The village marks the eastern point of the St. Margaret's Bay .

UNESCO HERITAGE

Old Town Lunenburg, where all streets are straight and all corners square, is the best surviving example of a British colonial policy of creating new settlements by imposing a pre-designed “model town” plan on whatever tract of wilderness it was the King’s pleasure to colonize. At least 21 North American settlements, from Cornwall and Niagara-on-the-Lake in Ontario to Savannah, Georgia, and Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, benefited from this policy. But none has survived in such pristine condition as the town of Lunenburg on the south coast Nova Scotia.

The settlement was created in June 1753 as a home for 1,453 mostly German-speaking Protestant German, Swiss and Montbéliardian French colonists. The townsite, true to then-current convention, consisted of seven north-south streets, 48 feet wide (with the exception of King Street, which is 80 feet), intersected at right angles by nine east-west streets, each 40 feet wide, creating blocks that were further divided into 14 lots of 40 by 60 feet each. Each family received one town lot. The London-based Board of Trade and Plantations developed the plans without regard to local topography, which is why Lunenburg’s streets are never less than straight but sometimes dizzyingly steep.

There are some 400 major buildings within the old town, 70 percent of them from the 18th and 19th centuries, almost all of them wood, and many colourfully painted.

Lunenburg is a haven for many artists who find inspiration in its surrounding beauty. Throughout the summer, the town hosts art festivals that showcase local artists’ range of media and subjects. July includes the Lunenburg Street Festival and Art Walk and the Nova Scotia Folk Art Festival, while the Lunenburg Folk Harbour Festival takes place in August, featuring traditional and contemporary folk music from around the province and region.

Quartet Gallery :
Local artists offering a variety of affordable, original works in a delightful venue. Framed and unframed art work in oils, acrylics, watercolours and mixed media, as well as all occasion cards.

Laurie Swim Gallery: An award-winning visual artist and author, who is nationally and internationally recognized; Laurie creates painterly works of art in fabric and thread portraying the landscapes and people of the South Shore.

Power House Art: Housed within a 150-year-old building, the gallery features oil paintings and charcoal drawings by Lynn Misner, well recognized artist in Canada and international as well. It is one of the few galleries that exhibits Inuit art in the Maritimes, offering a unique experience with a diverse range of sculptures and prints from the 1950s to the present.

Nova Terra Cotta Pottery: Joan Bruneau is a professional Studio Potter based in Lunenburg, Nova Scotia. She received many awards. Her studio is in this old house beautiful inside and outside, just by the famous Knot Pub. Her work is exhibited throughout North America and is in public collections including the AGNS, Canada, Sykes Gallery, USA and Jingdezhen Ceramics Institute, China.

Carmen Jaeger Jewellery: Carmen calls her craft “Pure joy, fire and transformation”. With 20 years experience in Germany she is an accomplished designer.

The Lunenburg Art Gallery: The Gallery provides a public venue for local, provincial and international artists to exhibit their work to the public. It sponsors workshops for artists and exhibitions by Lunenburg County school children.

Peer Gallery: The gallery exhibits the work of 13 Nova Scotia artists who have established reputations. The gallery emphasizes a complete diversity in art viewing: painting, drawing, mixed media, coloured fused glass, raku & mosaic wall pieces, wood turning, printmaking and other forms of artistic expression.

Purcell Family Art: Lunenburg’s oldest art gallery. Owned and operated by Joseph and Tela and family. Exhibiting their paintings and whimsical art forms.

Lord Studio Gallery: Located in the heart of Blue Rocks, the gallery displays artists who want to capture the essence of Nova Scotia.

OUTSIDE LUNENBURG

Westcote Bell Pottery: Co-founders Vaughan Smith and Jacqueline M. Cohen are a husband and wife team. Well known and accomplished artists, they moved to Nova Scotia and renovated a 160 year old boat house on the LaHave River estuary where the magic happens. Their unique style of pottery resonates with the beautiful landscape and elements on the South Shore and each of their crafted piece tells a story. Their studio is next to the Fort Point Light House and the LaHave River Bakery.
